About us

Secession Verlag für Literatur was founded in Zurich in 2009 as a publishing house for contemporary literature and new editions of hidden gems in German and in translation. It was voted the "Newcomer of the Year” in 2011 in Switzerland and won numerous prices for authors and designers.

Novels have been published by authors like Steven Uhly, Hélène Bessette, Esther Dischereit, Jérôme Ferrari, Lars Gustafsson, Magda Szabó, Primo Levi, Christian Uetz, Urs Mannhart and others. Recently the company was very successful in publishing literary non-fiction books, like Deborah Feldman’s »Unorthodox«, or Alan Rusbridger’s »Play it again«.

From the beginning of the company on it was part of its brand to carefully design books and produce them with great craftmenship. In charge of design and typography is since 2014 the legendary Erik Spiekermann.

The company is run by Christian Ruzicska (former Co-founder of Tropen Verlag) and Joachim von Zepelin (former correspondent at Financial Times Deutschland).

Mountaineering in the Lowlands

Mountaineering in the Lowlands

Mannhart uses fine, sinewy prose to elucidate the deeply homeless condition of the late modern man, who is forced into emotional participation even as he is powerless to be anything but a bystander (...) There is only the shame and horror of the small happiness in the shadow of great calamity. This breaking point of the human condition has been grippingly rendered in an epic kaleidoscope of love and death. (Neue Züricher Zeitung)

Kingdom of Twilight

Kingdom of Twilight

Literature can create worlds in which images, information, and emotions are so intertwined, that suddenly the reader is able to grasp what he was never able to do before. A stunning example of this is the new novel by Steven Uhly – he is one of few in his generation who understands how to tell a suspenseful story and simultaneously meet the highest literary standards.(Austrian National Radio)

One of the most important and haunting novels of recent German literature. (German National Radio)

The good luck Child

The good luck Child

Uhlys »Glückskind" has its ancestors in the 19th century, he writes much like a modern Charles Dickens or Victor Hugo: effusive, socially concerned, and with his heart firmly in the right place.
